Mumbai, with its 14 million people, has the largest organised bus transport network among major Indian cities; there are hundreds of lines (335 to be precise) and nearly 3400 buses, which carry around 450.000 people per day.

But there is no 32. At least, that is what B.E.S.T. (Mumbai’s City transport) website says. The B at the beginning of the Acronym referred to Bombay, but with the change in the name of the city from Bombay to Mumbai, the organisation is now known as The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport Undertaking.

Next to my hotel, the 332 passed by, so it will have to do for the post. It was difficult to find a lower number, as they use the Hindi numbers at the front, and our numbers at the side...

So the 332 links Kurla Station in the West with Agarkar Chowk, along the very busy road, along which the new Mumbai Metro Line one is being constructed. Driving in Mumbai is a different concept. It is not driving. I have described it as playing Tetris with the vehicles. If there is a space in the road, there will be some vehicle occupying it.

Buses follow each other, tooting their way, stopping or not at stops, where people can get on, even moving. The buses are old... very old, or at least, they look from two or three eras back. Livery is red with silver roofs for single deckers, and double deckers tend to be painted in several colours. They are mainly Ashok Leyland, manufactured in India. TATA new buses operate BRTS services, offering air conditioning.

The traffic is slow, the roads are appalling, and you can see the poor users suffering the heat of the non-air-con buses, windows open, people sleeping if they are lucky to get a seat.

Dubai, known by some as the city of Thousand Wonders, has a bus network that covers all areas of the emirate. It is managed by the governmental body Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). It has 76 routes (71 day services and 5 night services). Until 2008, the system was a bit deficient, but a huge investment has made the old buses to allow modern ones to take care of the service. Even the bus shelters have been changed, offering air conditioned while you wait for your bus inside. It's the first city where I have seen them.

Bus route 32C, unfortunately, is not one of the lines with modern buses. They are rather old. However a good 20 minute frequency compensates. It connects Al Qusais Bus Station with Al Satwa Bus Station, near teh World Trade Centre, serving the Airport. Curiously, it runs along the road that crosses under the Airport runway. I have the impression that once the overground rail (see the bridge structure in the above pricture) opens (scheduled theoretically for 09.09.2009, although I very much doubt it, as works are rather behind) it may have its route curtailed or modified.

UNA EXCURSIÓN ENTR WALSALL Y RUGELEY / AN EXCURSION BETWEEN WALSALL AND RUGELEY

Arriva Midlands Route 32 is a relatively new service in the Midlands. It started operation end of May 2008, replacing service 63 between Walsall and Norton Canes. 63A still exists, sharing part of the way with route 33.

It is normally served by 5 Dennis Dart buses on peak hours, serving Walsall Bus Station Via Aldridge, Brownhills, Norton Canes, Heath Hayes, Cannock & Hednesford terminating at Rugeley. It runs every 30 minutes during daytime and every 60 minutes at Evenings between Brownhills & Rugeley. I found statistical information: The journey time is 1 hour, 28 mins.

Stoke-on-Trent is a curious city. In fact, it is a conglomeration of several cities, with two clearly separated city centres. When you visit it and you ask for the city centre, they ask you: Which one? Hanley or Burslem? Curious. However, it seems that Hanley has become the real centre. To find the 32, you also need to go to Hanley. The 32, operated by First Potteries or First Staffordshire connects Hanley bus station with Uttoxeter every 20 minutes. Additionally, you can find the 32A, with practically the same route, via Alton Towers, Britain's most important Theme Park. But the route is relevant. It has added the number to its livery, to make it more obvious.

I would like to apologise for the quality of the pictures. It was a foggy day, and the camera could not improve it.

32 / 32A Y 320 EN ST. HELENS / 32 / 32A AND 320 IN ST HELENS

St Helens is a small town in Merseyside (UK) with around 100.000 inhabitants, a few miles away from Liverpool. The latter didn't have a 32 bus but, St. Helens not only has a 32, but also a 32A with a different destination, although most of the route is the same as the 32. On top of that, you can also find the 320, which takes you to Wigan, where, as I showed some time back, the 32 there takes you to Manchester.
The 32 in Helens connects Clinkham Wood, Haresfinch, St Helens, the Hospital and Sutton Manor with a 20 minute frequency Mon-Sat but not so often on Sundays. It is operated by
Arriva North West.

32A has a similar route, from Clinkham Wood, Haresfinch, St Helens, the Hospital establishing the terminus in Clock Face, also with a 20 minute service, but no Sunday service. It is also operated by
Arriva North West.

320, connects St Helens with Blackbrook, Old Whint, Haydock, Ashton in Makerfield, Plat Bridge, and Wigan, with a twice hourly service Mon - Sat and hourly on Sunday. It is also operated by the same company.

Volvo.
Malmö is the 3rd biggest city in Sweden with over 271.000 inhabitants. Just on the other side of the bridge/tunnel that links Sweden with Copenhagen, we find this city, that even though its Swedish, it has many links with the Danish capital.
Malmö has a fleet of green buses that run along the city. The Transport regulator Skånetrafiken, manages the routes within the region, although, the buses are operated by private companies. The urban network consists of 8 urban services, (numbered 1 to 8) with frequencies around 5 minutes and 7 Plus services (30-35 and 46), that run between every 10-30 minutes, depending on the time of the day.

Route 32 in Malmö starts in Käglinge (southeast end of the city), reaching the city centre (Centralen) and along the port, ends in Ön. Without any doubt, the 32 is the longest route of the Plus services. Of course, the buses are Volvo.

NATIONAL EXPRESS, TAMBIÉN TIENE 32 / NATIONAL EXPRESS, HAS ITS OWN 32.

All routes are numbered. Hence, we can find a 32 route that links Victoria Station in London with Portsmouth, in the south coast, with an hourly service during the day that lasts around 3 and 1/2 hours. In the picture, the bus passes Kensington in London, towards Portsmouth. the 32 service also calls at Heathrow Airport on both ways 30 minutes from London Victoria.

LIVERPOOL CRUZA EL RÍO CON EL 432 / LIVERPOOL CROSES THE RIVER WITH THE 432

Liverpool has around 450.000 inhabitants and it is serviced by a wide network of buses, controlled by the Transport Executive, called Merseytravel. The main bus operator is ARRIVA NORTH WEST that relays the former MTL and MerseyBus, after the privatisation, although the company covers the rest of the North West Region and North Wales. It has around 1,334 buses (88% single deckers and 65% low floor). Arriva in 2008 agreed to use low floor buses in the main routes in Liverpool, extending it throughout Merseyside by 2011.

Curiously enough, the city doesn't have a 32 route. However, the buses crossing over to the other side of the Mersey, numbered 4xx do have a 432 that links Liverpool city centre (Castle Street, in the picture with the City Hall at the back) with New Brighton, a former summer resort. The route crosses the Kingsway Tunnel, serving Poulton, Liscard, Wallasey and New Brighton. The service is combined with 430 and 433. Funnily, at night, the bus is renumbered N450, but it serves the same areas as the 432. Buses used in this route are usually double deckers.

Copenhagen, (aka The Mermaid City) has 276 bus routes, normally with yello livery, two metro lines (driverless) and 7 commuter trains (S-tog) serrving over 500.000 people in the borough, as well as the rest of the metropolitan areas. As usual, most routes run along the consolidated city; however, in order to find the 32, you need to cross over to Amager Island, which also hosts the International Airport.

It is not an important route, as it could be the 30 or 33, previous and next services; it is a shuttle service that links the picturesque fishing town of Dragør with Søvang. A sole bus is required to do the complete round in less than an hour, a condition that more than one bus driver would like for themselves. I feel that it cannot be that popular. In Dragør, it connects with routes 30, 33, 35, 36, 75E, 76E and 350S (express service)

Movia, is the regulator that controls the transport services in the borough and metropolitan area. They are not the owners of the vehicles, but are in charge of subcontracting these to the bus companies.

As a curiosity, all buses show their bus service number on all four sides of the bus, even inside, as shown in the middle picture. Tickets cost 17 DKK (around 2.26 Euro) within the area they have been purchased for.

Route 32, in Manchester, links Piccadilly Bus Station in the city with Wigan, in the Northwest of the province with a half an hourly frequency during daytime, and then, there are large restrictions to the service.

It also has a sister route, 132, to the Trafford Centre from Wigan. In both cases, First Manchester operates the buses, with both single and double deckers. As you can see in the first picture, handicapped people in wheelchairs can access easily.

First in Manchester carries approximately 100 million passengers each year on its 900 buses.

The fleet consists of 34 articulated buses, 148 double deck buses, 520 single deck buses, and 198 midi and minibuses. It is planned that by 2010, 200 additional double deckers will be incorporated to the fleet. In this area, there are 2400 workers, 1900 of which are drivers.

First in Manchester operate a total of 190 local bus routes, school buses operated on behalf of local passenger transport authorities and private school trusts.
